REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE

i love giving gifts. i also love wrapping them. what i don't
like, however, are those tacky gift bags from the drugstore that
are designed for either a five-year-old girl's princess-themed
birthday party or a thirteen-year-old boy's, sorry, man's bar
mitzvah [i'm looking at you, duane reade in union square].

so instead of settling, i utilized my resources [aka my
collection of recycled bags, ribbons, paper, twine, etc] to find
a more aesthetically pleasing wrapping option while
simultaneously being eco-friendly!

i used an old aritzia bag [which i find to be absolutely gorgeous
on its own] and painted the top with gesso to cover up the
logo/create texture over the graphic.  for the "tissue paper", i
fringed two long pieces of left over wrapping paper with scissors
and layered the pieces in the bag.  the gifts are wrapped using
that same paper and black twine for texture.

not to get all public service announcement-y on you all, but see
what you have in your home before rushing to buy wrapping
paper/gift bags.  you might be able to conjure something that is
way more interesting, unique, and totally thoughtful.  happy
birthday, jessica!  can't wait for you to open this.

TBT: TEST SHOOT

throwback thursday to last week when good friend ryan glick
[of swgnt and coffee n' clothes] and i got together for a little
test shoot.  he was playing with a fancy camera, i wanted my
outfit to be photographed--it was a win-win.  here are some shots
he took. pretty good for an amateur, eh? the boots
were photographed by my brother [aka my personal assistant], ike,
on our way out of ryan's west village apartment.

more photos like these to come if ryan and i ever get the chance
to hang out again [we are two very busy people]!

STRAW & GOLD - THE HOME SHOP

ONE + TWO + THREE + FOUR + FIVE + SIX + SEVEN

good design is easy to spot.  and these home goods from straw &
gold are spot on.  i've decided to feature straw & gold's home
shop, because i am honestly thoroughly impressed with the
collection of work on this site.  the amount of care and detail
that went/goes into each home-shop piece [or each piece from
every genre, for that matter] is unreal, and i think this must
be acknowledged [by a biased, yet honest, artist].

each product is charming, thoughtful,
charismatic, delectable, humble yet chic, nostalgic yet modern
(the list could go on forever) and evokes a certain kind of
comfort.  it almost feels that each product was made specifically
for you by a loving friend.  i truly only represent
products/brands/sites that i believe in, and straw & gold is at
the top of my list and in the center of my heart.  the more i
scroll, the more i am impressed and, subsequently, the more i
want.

and on a completely sappy note, i'm honored to be featured with
such a beautifully curated body of work, which, by the way, is
all available to you and you and you and you and even you at

LIVE IN IT

AG JEANS, SHIRT FROM URBAN THAT I TOOK UPON MYSELF TO CROP, STEVE MADDEN LEATHER
JACKET, MICHAEL KORS PURSE, ADIDAS SNEAKERS

i've been living in these adidas sneakers lately.
their awesomeness allows me to live stylishly without
compromising comfort [sometimes my feet just can't take it
anymore].  i've also been living it up with some red lips by
NARS.  basically, there's lots of living going on lately.

life is fab.

BETTER CRISPY

everything is better crispy--bacon [which i don't eat],
chicken skin [which i also don't eat], potato chips, tate's
chocolate chip cookies and... wait for it... broccoli.  here's
how to crispify your greens:

-preheat the oven to 425
-cut broccoli into florets and then in half (so they can lay flat
on the baking sheet)
-toss with olive oil, salt & pepper
-roast for about 20 minutes, or until they're browned
-top with fresh lemon zest and lemon juice
-eat your veggies [and actually enjoy them]

PHASE I

readers, meet elivia and becky--my two new
friends/partners in crime/partners in fashion.  they are the
founders of MARKT Brooklyn, an instagram-shop [yes, you buy ]
everything via instagram!] selling exclusive vintage finds
and awesome pieces. we have some kick-ass collaborations coming
up, and phase I [falling in love, bonding, voicing ideas,
organizing our many thoughts, spilling coffee... three times,
taking care of biju, laughing, comparing bunions], was completed
today at saturdays surf.  my soy latte was made even greater by
fantastic company [both human and animal], great ideas, and great
fun!  oh and that man is jesse.  he's australian.

stay tuned for even more fun with these badass canadians.

TIME FLIES

time flies when you're:

-going for 5.25 mile runs [personal record!]
-taking photos on said runs with your new iphone 5s
-becoming bffs with a stranger in grand central and talking for
way too long
-meeting with awesome companies

time to call it a night!

ALEXANDRA'S FRIEND RYAN

RYAN'S SUNGLASSES, JESSICA SIMPSON HAT FROM MACYS

since our saturday plans fell through, my friend ryan and
decided to catch brunch at jack's wife freda on sunday, which
was a solid decision.

my brother ike joined us while ry and i obnoxiously
photographed ourselves/our food with ryan's obnoxiously
incredible camera [which i plan on stealing from him].  the food
was fantastic, per usual; we actually read one of my previous
posts about jwf's famous brunch as our digital appetizer.

ryan ordered the madame freda, ike got jack's burger, and i
got the mediterranean breakfast [whose photo i completely
butchered, so you'll just have to imagine how delicious it
looked].  the incredible food + lively atmosphere + good company,
combined with the unbelievable spring weather made this brunch
totally memorable [and clearly blog worthy].

also ryan and i photographed jwf's iced coffee for
coffeenclothes post.  we then ventured to the west village
to continue with playing with that fancy nikon, which
means new outfit post coming up!

BUSY IS GOOD

holy shit, i've been busy.  but that is something i am
not complaining about.  busy is good.  here's what i've been up
to in the past week:

1.  running - i'm back on a running routine, and i've been
snapping photos of scenery along the way [i'm quite the
multitasker].

  2.  food - tacos with rebecca at calexico, diner with my
brother, beautifully frosted cupcakes at billy's.

3.  punderdome 3000 - honestly one of the best new york city
[more specifically, brooklyn] experiences i've had in my entire
life.  it's basically like a rap battle but with puns.  my friend
[and fellow BLACKOUT member], noah, participated in it.  he did
great.  the judges made fun of him.  we all laughed.  i
highly recommend going.

4.  brooklyn bowl - i subbed on my friend [and fellow BLACKOUT
member], carly's team since her roommie couldn't make it.  it was
fun.  i made more friends and we danced in peoples faces.  i suck
at bowling, but whatever.

speaking of BLACKOUT, i have a show tonight... and as i mentioned
on my facebook, if you are my friend and are in new york city
and do not attend my concert, then you are dead to me.
more info here. :D

anyway, there is lots to do before this show, including
attending a meat mrkt launch event with my friend ryan of swgnt
and coffee n' clothes.  we will be sure to take some photos in
the two hours that we have together and share them with all of you.

wow... i gotta run.  let the business ensue!

WEEKEND UPDATE

WALTER BAKER SHORTS, H&M CROP TOP, DEENY & OZZY SANDALS, H&M PURSE, VINTAGE BRACELET FROM MY MOMMY

this weekend i got exactly what i needed--a broadway show
[aladdin... it was amazing], time with friends, birthday parties,
barhopping, sharing cabs with strangers, a new crop-top [which
comes hand-in-hand with feeling sexy], ridiculous selfies
+ "bitchy mirror pics" with one of my best friends, kelsie, and a
bunch of singing.  now all i need is some rest.  or more singing.
off to a cappella rehearsal!

THE BETTER DEVILED EGG

i know what you're thinking: why is a jewish girl like you,
alexandra, preparing the least jewish dish ever--deviled eggs?
well i'll tell you, curious reader.  i was inspired by this dish
from fresh roast cafe and realized that the fusion of a
traditional jewish delicacy [smoked white fish] and a traditional
church dish [deviled eggs] was just about the best damn thing
i've ever experienced.  so here is my version of the better
deviled egg [without measurements, because the only measuring
tool you need to prepare these is common sense, really]:

2.  once cooled, cut in half and scoop out yolks into a bowl
3.  add mayo to yolks (enough to make it creamy, but not too rich)
4.  add brown mustard, garlic powder, salt & pepper
5. remove all of the meat from a smoked trout [be careful of
bones... those things are practically invisible]
6.  add the fish to the yolks, but don't break it up
too much; it's nice to have a little bit of texture in each bite
7.  use a small spoon to scoop the mixture back into the egg
whites [if you're feeling really ambitious, you can use a piping
bag with a large star tip]
8.  top with chopped scallions and smoked paprika
8.  eat at least a dozen within the next five minutes
