A BETTER COMMUTE

JEWELRY BY LINA NOEL, MACKAGE LEATHER JACKET, FOREVER21 JUMPSUIT

commuting sucks.  it generally involves me being tired, cranky,
hungry, and sweaty, considering there is little-to-no ventilation
at my F train stop.  and while listening to music + sipping
on stumptown coldbrew slightly alleviates these first world problems
of mine, there's one more thing that is guaranteed to improve my
daily trek to soho--traveling in style.  so when lina noel asked me
to do a shoot in the subway featuring some pieces from her latest
collection, i was more than happy to do so.

all lina noel jewelry is handmade, unique, and signed by the artist
herself.  some of her materials include 14k gold, sterling silver,
and unique crystals.  an insane amount of attention to detail and
thought goes into each piece, and it truly shows. lina is a genuine
artist and visionary (not to mention one of the nicest, coolest,
sweetest native new yorkers i've ever met).  she also has partnered
with The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust to donate $50 of each
signature elephant necklace sold to help foster an elephant [and
who doesn't love elephants?!].

so here's a big thank you to lina for drastically improving my
commute; the subway is a much more enjoyable place when i'm covered
in such gorgeous jewelry.  you too can improve your commute by
shopping her line here.  and you can improve an elephant's commute
[well, life] here.

PROVING MY POINT

it doesn't take much to prove my point about chalk point kitchen
being one of the best brunch spots in new york city, but i figured
i'd make the effort since i absolutely love the place [and the
staff].

atmosphere:  the decor of this spacious restaurant makes me
feel like i'm grabbing dinner off of route 66 [if route 66 ran
through soho].  its country chic vibe prepares me for the homey meal
i'm about to devour, while andrew andrew spinning [and
actually playing good music] reminds me that i am in fact dining at
a new york city restaurant [i love those guys].

food:  i literally dreamt about those cinnamon rolls
last night, woke up thinking i was eating one, and then cried myself
back to sleep knowing that that moment had passed.  the food
is incredible.  the avocado hash was unreal, apparently the bloody
mary was the best travis has ever had, and the avocado toast
was spectacular.  it's farm-to-table, fresh, filling [they do
not skimp on portions], and flavorful.  good thing i'll be back
monday evening for dinner!

service:  i always judge service at a restaurant based off of how
many times i have to ask for my water glass to be refilled.  well, i
didn't have to ask once.  and the water was cucumber infused.  chalk
point; you win at life.  your staff is awesome, stylish, down to
earth, talkative, cool, and best of all, attentive, making it an
absolute pleasure to dine here.

if the above foodporn [and insta fooporn], adorable decor, and
dapper DJs aren't enough to convince you, then go check out chalk
point yourself.  and remember kids, don't forget to instagram your
food [and tag @chalkpointnyc]!

DEFINE "BAGEL"

wood fire ovens?  gourmet flavor combinations? subway
tiles? everything i thought i knew about new york city bagels has
been challenged, and i'm surprisingly okay with it.

travis and i checked out black seed bagels--the charming, hip
soho cafe that is reinventing a new york staple--to experience
what everyone has been talking [well, instagramming] about.

t ordered the ricotta with apple and honey on a sesame
flagel, and i got two eggs, avocado, tomato, and cheddar on
an everything.  these bagels get more love and attention
than newborn child, and it shows.  the texture was fantastic
[slightly more dense than what we were used to, but still great],
the ingredients were super fresh and the flavors were perfectly
on par [seriously, that whole ricotta situation made me question
my entire existence as a bagel-eating jewish woman].

so if you ever find yourself searching aimlessly for a bagel
place in soho [and failing miserably... we've all been there],
just google maps your way to 170 elizabeth street for a redefined
version of this familiar breakfast treat.

PEEK A BOO

peek a boo, i see a boo pala original shipped straight from
turkey courtesy the designer herself.  ms. pala is a good friend
and an even better visionary whose looks are loud, bold, and
unique.  while the pieces boo sent me are one-of-a-kind, you can
shop her stunning line at cagecity and snatch a piece that is
guaranteed to make you the life of the fashion party.

thank you so much for the gifts, boo, and thank you everyone for
browsing [or even better... shopping] her stuff!

FOOL ME ONCE

treated myself to dairy free, processed-sugar free, pretty much
fat free "bananas foster ice cream" the other night.  all i did
was peel some ripe bananas the night before, freeze them, throw
them into a food processor (i kept blending and scraping down the
sides until it reached a creamy consistency), add some cinnamon
and dessert was complete.

wait... this delicious, rich, satisfying treat wasn't ice cream?
first my eyes were fooled and then my taste buds fell susceptible
to this trickery.

shame on me? shame on nobody.

BIRTHDAY ESSENTIALS: PART II

i told you there were a lot of photos...

anyway, here are the rest of the things i deem essential in order
to have the best. birthday. ever

6. handmade birthday banner - there's something refreshing about
featuring one unique decoration rather than a plethora that have
just rolled off the assembly line.  this banner took me 3x longer
to make than the cake topper version, which must mean it's 3x
more special, right? once again... worth it!

7.  goodie bags - what better way to show your friends you
appreciate them coming to your very last-minute party than to
leave them with cute-ass mini popcorn bags filled with candy?
none.  that's what.

8. friends - i always say this, but i am nothing without
my friends.  you all bring joy to my life and sanity to my
brain.  new york city wouldn't be the same if i didn't have
such wonderful people to share it with.  i'm so grateful to have
been surrounded by those closest to me on the night of my
birthday, even though i gave 48 hours notice [in true spur of
the moments fashion, i planned this party two days in
advance...oops!].  thanks for coming, ya'll.  hope you had as
much fun as i did.

9.  food - truffle mac n' cheese?  baked fries?  more
cupcakes? don't mind if i do.

10.  no inhibitions - loosen up.  this is a birthday party, not
an awards ceremony.  my hair was frizzy, my body was sweaty, my
face was sticky, and i gave no fucks.  i had one of the most
memorable nights of my life with some of my favorite people at
the most perfect location, and nothing [not even unbearable
humidity after a full day of work] could have ruined that.

okay so these 10 items aren't really essential--you could have
your birthday party on the L platform for all i care--but they
definitely enhance a day that's already awesome.  when it comes
down to it, all that matters is that you're surrounded by [and
singing with] the people you love, you're eating dank food, and
you're feeling good.  the night i turned 24 was one of the most
memorable nights of my life, and i can't wait for the rest of
this year to be just as memorable.
